BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
On Saturday, October 30, 1897, the Summerville Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle was organized with 30 members in attendance. Sometime between December 1898 and October 1906, the group became an independent reading circle and called themselves the Timrod Literary Circle. The reading circle met in member’s homes until enough books were collected to necessitate a rented space. In April of 1908, while the Timrod Literary Circle met in the Guerin Building, the Town of Summerville offered to donate a lot upon which the association could build a permanent library. The circle incorporated through the state as an eleemosynary entity and registered officially as The Timrod Literary and Library Association. The members began earnestly adding to their building fund by serving luncheons to tourist groups, subletting their space, catering, and hosting sales and other events. Donations of lumber and construction supplies were also secured as well as a $2,000 loan.

The Timrod Library opened at 217 Central Ave, Summerville, in January 1915. Members continued, as before, volunteering time as circulating librarians until a paid librarian was first engaged in 1917. Although a yearly subscription fee of $1.00 was charged, with children’s membership ranging from free to .25¢, the goal of the association’s board was to always become a free library.

In 1927, two more rooms were added to the library, which provided room for a kitchen, more book shelves, and meeting space. A final addition, named for long-time Timrod librarian, Catherine Stewart, was completed in 1985; which now serves as a reference library, records storage, and meeting room.

The Timrod Library has never been a true public library in the sense that neither the Town of Summerville nor the County of Dorchester operated the library exclusively with tax-based funds. Most years, but not every year, the town council gave $250 to $1,000 toward operating expenses. In 1947, the county offered $30 monthly in support. Currently, the library receives moderate funds from town and county tax assessments. The majority of the operating expenses come from memberships, donations, and an annual fall book sale.

Several times throughout its history, the Timrod was turned down for financial assistance because of its policy on racial segregation. While the association provided financial and educational support to the nearby Carver Library, it was not until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that The Timrod Library was open to all town and county residents. Because the board members would not sign the Compliance Agreement of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Timrod effectively cut itself off from any State Library services made available directly through federal funding, including reference and interlibrary loan.

Once the members changed their designation from “Circle” to “Association,” their meetings continued to feature a speaker or literary discussion for some time. Eventually a separate literary group called the Monday Club was formed, which held their meetings outside of the library. Currently, the library sponsors a monthly reading group called “Talking About Books.”

Library dues that were initially set at $1.00 in 1908 remained so until 1975, when fees were raised to $2.00 for residents and $3.00 for out-of-county residents. Annual dues are currently $25 for a family membership.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The records of The Timrod Literary and Library Association are comprised of composition books, ledger books, loose-leaf paper notes, photographs, newspaper clippings, printed materials, some information on cd-rom, and other media. Minutes from 1899 to 1904 are missing from the collection. These cover a time period after the creation of the original Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle and before its successor, The Timrod Literary Circle, changed its name to The Timrod Literary and Library Association in 1908. It is rare that monthly and annual meetings were conducted without interruption and the researcher will find that a recording secretary usually took note of cancelled or postponed meetings, sometimes for several months consecutively.
