The Timrod Library and Main Street Reads present author Sally H. Jacobs to discuss Althea: The Life of Tennis Champion Althea Gibson, on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2 p.m. in the Catherine Stewart Room of the Timrod Library. Tickets are $40 ($30 for members) and include a copy of the book. A reception and book signing will follow. Althea Gibson, who was born in South Carolina, was the top female tennis player in the world for both 1957 and 1958. She became the first Black woman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated and the second to appear on the cover of Time. Seven years later she became the first Black woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association.
Sally H. Jacobs is a former reporter for the Boston Globe, a winner of the George Polk Award and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Reporting. She is the author of The Other Barack, a biography of Barack Obama’s father.
