If you enjoy curling up with cup of tea and a good mystery, don’t miss our next event! “A Comfortable Murder: British Detective Fiction of the Golden Age” will be presented by Margaret J. Oakes, PhD, professor of English at Furman University at 2 p.m., Sept. 29 in the Library’s Catherine Stewart Room. A British-tea themed reception will follow the program.

Dr. Oakes’s talk will cover the history of mysteries, beginning with Wilke Collins and G.K. Chesterton through the crowning achievements of the Queens of Crime, including, Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, and Margery Allingham.
Dr. Oakes is a Professor of English at Furman University, specializing in English Renaissance literature. She also enjoys and studies British detective fiction and children’s fantasy literature. She is the author of To Gender or Not to Gender: Casting and Characters for 21st Century Shakespeare, about gender identity and expression in Shakespearean performance.
